Anyway, when we think of how we can best honor Dr. King, when we think of how we are today writing the Black History of tomorrow, when we consider the challenges reflected upon in the cover article History Rewritten, it all leads to organizations like WEA. All these challenges, opportunities and responsibilities are in the capable but often overburdened hands of people like Yolanda Lamar-Wilder. Visionary leadership has never been easy, often it is not fun, and many times those most resistant to its guidance are most in need of the potential benefits organizational involvement offers.
Middle Class America in general and African Americans in particular are in a struggle for survival. While the obstacles are many, so is the potential. Honoring a glorious past and insuring a bright future can only occur if we step up to our current responsibilities, and acknowledge that most of us are recovering underachievers, with our purpose trapped and most of our power untapped. We have the ability and the need. We have the leadership. We have the organizational structure. We have the ideas and ideals.
Take a break from the redundancy of complacency. Check out WEA or other organizations that are addressing the needs that we must fulfill. Realize that the best way go to beyond your limited vision of yourself, is to become immersed in something greater than yourself. Understand as you become involved in whatever you become involved in, that you are a part of the solution. Whatever situation you find yourself in, you take with you ideas, aspirations, talents, abilities and experiences in a combination that only you have. Go forward, wanting and believing that you are part of the answer, and you will soon be enjoying not only a better, stronger and more confident you, but also the benefits of The Power of Association.
