Congratulations Crystal Thurmond by Henry Ford
Congratulations to Crystal Thurmond on her recent graduation from Capella
University with a Master in Human Services.  Yes, while raising a bright young man,
Crystal works full time, and after earning her bachelor’s degree several years ago
from Ohio Wesleyan University decided to immediately continue her education.

While we were still reeling and reveling in amazement to the energy and tenacity of
this young lady, she hit us with part two of the one-two punch.  Crystal has now
been accepted at Capella University into the Doctoral Program for Human
Services.

It is said that while many spend time and energy saying what cannot be done,
others are busy doing it.  I can clearly remember Crystal when she was still in her
crib, and I am now faced with the probability that in the not too distant future, I will
be addressing her as Doctor Thurmond.  And the best part of it is that the time
cannot come soon enough.

So if much of the foundation for Avion’s success came from his mother Crystal, and
much of the foundation for Crystal’s success came from her mother Patricia
Thurmond, we begin so see a pattern that defies statistics.  Here we have two
single mothers in succession that through sacrifice and by example, are creating
upstanding citizens, future leaders and role models.

While Crystal and Avion continue to learn and achieve, they are creating the Black
History of tomorrow.  Quietly, individually (and sometimes with the support of family
and friends), while they “do their own things,” they are creating for others a
roadmap to success.  All we have to do is draw from the strength of their examples.

Please join us in praying for future success for my Goddaughter Crystal and her
son Avion.
