No matter how orderly we might try to structure our future, life often deals us a
surprising degree of drama.  Yet, regardless of how much things change, life often
deals us a surprising degree of consistency.  Try as I might to plan and proceed
toward well thought out goals and objects, stuff happens.  Try as I might to anticipate
change and alter my direction, there seems to always be a strong omni-present force
making constant adjustments as I drift off course in the pursuit of making a bigger
difference.

It is always tempting to want to make “A bigger splash” changing lives by the
thousands under “bright lights in the big city.”  I was probably spoiled by one of my
first speeches where I had the good fortune to address an audience of over 6000
people during the commencement ceremonies for Cuyahoga Community College.
While it has been difficult to match the audience size and the loud applause, events of
the past year have reaffirmed that I am on the right course.  It was a chance meeting
of an acquaintance who shared with Dianne and I that I inspired her to begin writing.
It was the gift from the heart of professional comedian and speaker Gene Turner, who
despite  all his fame and glory, continues to serve others with humility and kindness.
It was those looks from a friend in need that said “I don’t believe you did this for me.”
And these are just some of the reflections from the past few weeks.

Going into 2007, I am thankful for the foundation upon which I stand, proud of the
lives I have touched, confident of my message and my mission, and anxious to share
what I have to offer with your audience.  Even as I think “outside the box” and outside
of probabilities, I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to be able to enhance even
one life at a time, often at a time I would not have expected, in a place I would not
have known of, and under circumstances I would not have believed.

I am blessed by years of touching the lives of others, I need to know that you know
that I am available to address your organization for MLK programs, Black History
programs and other functions.
