Avion Thurmond Inducted Into
Woodbury Scholars Program
CONGRATULATIONS to Avion Thurmond for
his recent induction into the Woodbury Scholars
Program.  The Woodbury Scholars program,
based at Woodbury Elementary School in
Shaker Heights, Ohio is designed to teach and
promote academic excellence and good
citizenship.  The highly successful program,
currently overseen by Shaker Heights Teacher
Nathaniel Reese, has been recognized by many,
including the Cleveland Chapter of The Links,
Incorporated.

The program’s Master of Ceremony was Sean
McKinley.  A dynamic and challenging keynote
address was delivered by Stanley Miller,
executive director of the Cleveland Branch of the
NAACP.  Closing remarks came from Mrs.
Barbara Whitaker.

Among the program highlights was a 5th Grade
perspective of the Scholars Program, shared by
Cameron Campbell, Courtney Mays, and Tyler
Thomas.  Also well received and highly
appreciated were comments delivered by MAC
Scholars, some of the high school students that
had experienced and benefitted from the
program while they were at the elementary
school.  It was good to hear how those teachings
and experiences had positively impacted their
lives.  Special presentations were delivered by
Mr. Larry Miller and Mr. Nathaniel Reese.

Other program participants in the May 6th
ceremony included Devon Amoo-Mensah, Elliott
Burgess, Darien Ferguson, Justin Hobbs, Ime
Umosen, and Imoh Umosen.

The recognition program concluded with
refreshments and personal interaction between
students, parents, staff and administrators.  Our
congratulations and thanks to all who planned,
participated in, or worked toward this uplifting
event.

Sadly I didn’t see the news media.  I apologize if
they were there and I simply missed them.  The
good news is that VISIONS was there, and we
owe my goddaughter Crystal Thurmond (Avion’s
mother) a great big THANK YOU for keeping us
posted on Avion’s progress.
