A Royal Blue Essence Affair presented by Zeta Phi Beta Sorority
|
On March 15th Dianne and I celebrated our
survival of another Cleveland winter by attending
a fund-raiser presented by The Ladies of Zeta
Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., Nu Theta Zeta Chapter.
Presented as “A Royal Blue Essence Affair”, the
evening of Jazz and dining featured The Keith
McKelley Project. Although we had not
previously heard of the group, we soon
discovered that it had been our loss. The band
was absolutely fantastic, as was the food, and
the company.
The “After Five Affair” took place at the Embassy
Suites in Beachwood, Ohio. We were excited
about attending this affair for several reasons.
After the semi-confinement of a somewhat snowy
winter, it was time for a night of celebration with
good music, good food and good company. In
addition to the fine work done by Zeta Phi Beta
and the benefits to students, we had the pride in
knowing that my goddaughter Crystal Thurmond
is actively involved in the Cleveland Chapter’s
work.
When Crystal first mentioned the affair, we
realized that we needed to make room on the
calendar, and in our bank account. During
these challenging times, even this modestly
priced affair might have been skipped, except for
the fact that Crystal is one of those rare
individuals that never asks for anything. On the
contrary, she is a giver, which partially explains
her commitment to the work of Zeta Phi Beta.
As I reflected back several years, I recalled that
Crystal was responsible for me securing a Black
History Month speaking engagement at Ohio
Wesleyan University, where she was then
attending school. Even as she pursued her
education, Crystal was making a difference in
the lives of others. Despite her small stature
and quiet demeanor, she is not the one to run
away from a challenge or turn a deaf ear on the
legitimate needs of others.
So it became our pleasure to attend and help
contribute in a small way to the goals and
objectives of Zeta Phi Beta. It was an evening
we will not soon forget, and we had the pleasure
of being among Crystal’s special guests. Dianne
and I were so special that we sat at the table with
Crystal’s mother, Pat Thurmond.
